Lakes Secwepemc Foodland Conservation Society

Dedicated to protecting, maintaining, and regenerating
the Secwepemc Biocultural Heritage.

Who are we?

The Lakes Secwepemc Foodland Conservation Society is a not-for-profit society founded and led by community members in 2023 in response to a recognized need to inform and advocate for participatory decision-making on matters impacting our traditional hunting, fishing, farming, and gathering areas.

Our Vision

We strive to establish Secwepemc Foodland Conservation Areas to ensure the preservation of our biocultural heritage for generations to come. By addressing underlying social, economic, climate, and environmental justice issues, we aim to strengthen the bonds between our community and the land, water, and ecosystems that sustain us.

Our Mission

We uphold our sacred responsibilities by fostering sustainable food systems rooted in Secwepemc laws and customs. Through education, community-based research, and advocacy, we promote subsistence-based cultural and economic strategies while supporting small-scale markets for Lakes Secwepemc farmers and harvesters.

Our values

  • Sacred Responsibility: Balancing rights-based approaches with respect for our ancestral obligations.
  • Trauma-Informed Healing: Promoting community health and resilience.
  • Authenticity and Trust: Building respectful and truthful relationships.
  • Relational Accountability: Fostering intergenerational cooperation and collective well-being.

How We Serve Our People?

We are accountable to the Lakes Secwepemc communities of Neskonlith, Adams Lake, Little Shuswap, and other related bands. Our work supports people of all genders, generations, and identities through:

  • Fostering interconnectedness among land, water, and people.
  • Practicing consensus-based decision-making.
  • Building trust across intra-tribal relationships.
  • Amplifying voices that are often unheard.

“We assert our Secwepemc rights and responsibilities in collective decision-making to protect the land, water, people, plants, and animals that sustain us.”
